Here at The Tutoring Center in Lawrenceville, GA, our one-to-one instruction is designed to keep distractions to a minimum while your child is being tutored. But, with the many distractions in school and at home, it isn't easy for your child to focus on a task for any length of time. Focus and concentration are critical life skills. Here are a few tips to help you in keeping your child focused.

But it’s Boring!

Have you heard this statement from your child too many times? Make sure the activity or task is age-appropriate for your child. One of the reasons children lose focus is because it's either too easy or too hard for them. Explain to your child that sometimes in life we all have things we have to do that are boring or tedious. This will help him understand that not all things are fun and games. You can also point out that the sooner he completes the task, the sooner he can do the fun things he wants.

Sectionalize

A large project can be overwhelming. A good way to help your child's concentration is to take a big project and sectionalize it. Split it up into smaller, easier to deal with parts. We have all experienced that feeling, "I don't even know where to start." Working on smaller portions of a large project will give your child a feeling of progress as each task is completed.

Healthy Foods and Sleep

Huge factors to help your child concentrate is making sure he eats right and gets enough sleep. Being tired and eating a carb-heavy diet will make him sleepy which will make him lose focus. Fresh fruits, vegetables and protein in your child’s diet will make a difference in his performance.

Memory Games

Your child can experience longer periods of concentration with practice. Playing memory games with your child often is a great way to increase his focus and have fun at the same time.
